Two Years Into Their War of Survival, Ukraine Has Been Abandoned By the GOP.

DEMOCRACY

Two years into the war of survival two things are clear.

1. Ukraine has been utterly abandoned by the Republican Party. Whatever their reasoning is, the Trump wing of the Republican Party (which IS the Republican Party of today) does not care what happens to Ukraine. Despite the opposition of the majority of the GOP in the Senate and in the House, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson is beholden to the presumptive Republican presidential nominee and will not put the aid package to the vote. I find that horrifying and the final betrayal of traditional Reaganist conservatism.

2. Ukrainian immigrants to the US, as well as many post-communist-regime immigrants - have historically allied themselves with the GOP. Given Reagan's anti-communist doctrine, it is understandable.

Trumpism of course has very little principled opposition to any repressive regime, in fact Trump himself has been fairly open in his admiration of strongmen.

I have to believe the Ukrainian immigrant community will come to understand the existential issues involved for Ukraine and will pull their support from Trump, but I have yet to see any strong evidence of it.
